How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It should read approximately 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all.  no title  pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, but i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be an excellent choice.



5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a variety of issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the Audi's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This part is common across the Audi 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
